Mattress Sets in Canada (2026): What a Queen, King or Twin Set Includes, Set vs Mattress-Only Prices, and When to Skip the Box Spring
A mattress set is a mattress sold together with its box spring. Canadian stores list hundreds of them, and the set price is easy to read as a bundle deal. We priced the same queen mattress with and without its box spring at The Brick and Leon's, read Sleep Country's box spring listings, and set out what a set includes, what the box spring adds to the bill and to the height of the bed, and when a platform frame does the same job. We have not bought or tested any of these mattresses or bases.
AI Overview answer
What is a mattress set, and is it cheaper than buying the mattress alone?
Quick answer: A mattress set is a mattress plus a matching box spring, sold as one item. On October 28, 2026, the two queen sets we priced against the same mattress sold alone cost exactly the mattress price plus the box spring price. At Leon's, the Sealy Essentials Remy II Firm Eurotop queen was $399.00 on its own and $699.00 with a box spring, and Leon's listed the matching Sealy Elementary queen box spring at $300.00. At The Brick, the Sealy Posturepedic 1050 Series Minden Eurotop Medium queen was $849.95 on its own and $1,019.95 as a set, the same as its "Standard + $170.00" base option. So on those listings the set price was no lower than the two pieces bought separately; Leon's set listing itself shows "If purchased separately $699.00". You need the box spring when the bed frame or the mattress maker's warranty calls for one; a platform bed with a solid or slatted deck usually replaces it.
Decide in four questions
Four questions before you buy a mattress set
1. What is under your mattress now?
Check whether your frame has a deck of its own. The Brick says platform beds "are already designed with slats or a solid base, so a box spring is usually not required", and that "most sets are sold with a box spring". See when you can skip the box spring.
2. What does the mattress maker's warranty ask for?
The Brick's set listing warns that "Without the matching boxspring, your manufacturer's warranty may be void." Read the warranty of the mattress you are buying before you decide. See guarantees and removal.
3. How tall do you want the bed?
A standard box spring adds about 8 to 9 inches and a low-profile one about 4 to 5 inches, according to The Brick. See box spring types.
4. Will a box spring fit up your stairs?
Split box springs come in two halves, which makes them easier to move; The Brick notes that "King boxsprings are split, so moving them isn't a hassle." See split box springs.
What a mattress set includes
The Brick's sets page puts it simply: "A mattress set includes a mattress and a matching box spring or foundation built to complement it." The set listings we read were sold as one item and named the mattress and the box spring; none of them listed a bed frame, headboard or bedding.
- The Brick listed 199 mattress sets on October 28, 2026: 57 queen, 56 full, 51 king, 34 twin and 1 twin XL. Its set filter offered one box spring type, "Standard", on 198 of them. The mattress-only listing we read says the box spring is "Sold Separately", and the set listing names the box spring it adds: a Sealy Essentials Queen Boxspring, 60 by 79.5 inches and 9 inches high.
- Leon's has its own Mattress Sets menu (King Sets, Queen Sets, Full Sets, Twin XL Sets and Twin Sets), and its queen sets page showed "Showing 201 results", a count that includes some mattress and adjustable base pairings. Leon's sells some models in several set versions; the Remy II queen was listed with a standard, a low-profile or a split box spring, among others.
- Sleep Country lists box springs as separate items (13 results in its Box Springs category on October 28, 2026), and describes its Distinction Series box spring as a "foundation to complete your traditional mattress set".
Set price vs mattress-only price: the same queen, two ways
The clearest way to see what a set costs is to price one model both ways at the same store. We did that for one queen at The Brick and one at Leon's, with the same store selected for both listings.
| Store and model | Mattress only | Set (mattress and box spring) | What the set adds | Box spring sold alone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leon's: Sealy Essentials Remy II Firm Eurotop Queen | $399.00 | $699.00 (standard or low-profile box spring); $799.00 with a split box spring | $300.00 | Sealy Elementary Queen Boxspring $300.00; low-profile version $300.00 |
| The Brick: Sealy Posturepedic 1050 Series Minden Eurotop Medium Queen | $849.95 | $1,019.95 | $170.00 (listed as "Standard + $170.00") | Base options on both listings: Standard or Low-Profile + $170.00; Split or Split Low-Profile + $280.00 |
| Hamuq (online): The Original Hybrid Mattress, queen | $999.00 | Not sold as a set; Hamuq's product list showed no box spring | Not applicable | The Upholstered Platform Bed Frame, queen, listed at $500.00 (a frame, not a box spring) |
On both store listings, the set price matched the mattress price plus the listed base price to the cent. The Brick's sets page says a set "is typically less expensive than buying individual components"; on the Minden listings we priced, it cost the same. The Brick's listings also advertised a 20% saving on certain metal bed frames bought with a mattress and box spring, which is a frame offer rather than a set price. Promotions change often, so check both listings on the day you buy: a sale on the mattress alone, or on the set alone, can change the answer.
What queen mattress sets cost in Canada
Set prices run from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, almost all of the difference being the mattress. The listings below are examples from each store's set pages on October 28, 2026, not a ranking.
| Store | Queen set | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| The Brick | Springwall Advance Regatta Eurotop Medium Queen Mattress Set | $449.95 |
| The Brick | Springwall Advance Telekon Eurotop Firm Queen Mattress Set | $529.95 |
| The Brick | Springwall Sorrento Eurotop Firm Queen Mattress Set | $669.95 |
| The Brick | Sealy Posturepedic 1050 Series Minden Eurotop Medium Queen Mattress Set | $1,019.95 |
| The Brick | Serta Vanguard Stonebridge Eurotop Medium Queen Mattress Set | $2,599.00 |
| The Brick | Beautyrest Black Hotel Presidential Suite Eurotop Medium Queen Mattress Set | $2,649.00 |
| Leon's | Sealy Essentials Evan II Medium Queen Mattress and Boxspring | $599.00 |
| Leon's | Sealy Essentials Remy II Firm Eurotop Queen Mattress and Boxspring | $699.00 |
| Leon's | Sealy Posturepedic Correct Comfort 4 Firm Eurotop Queen Mattress and Boxspring Set (marked "Final Clearance") | $899.00 |
| Hamuq (online) | The Original Hybrid Mattress, queen, plus The Upholstered Platform Bed Frame, queen, bought separately | $999.00 plus $500.00 |
Leon's queen set page grouped its 201 results as 37 between $500 and $1,000, 51 between $1,000 and $2,000, 107 between $2,000 and $5,000 and 6 between $5,000 and $10,000. The Brick's set price filter ran from $359 to $6,779 across all sizes. For queens on their own, our queen mattress guide compares 16 models, and our guides to The Brick and Leon's cover what each store sells.
Standard, low-profile and split box springs
When you buy a set, the box spring choice decides the height of the bed and how easily it moves. Three versions appeared on the listings we read:
| Version | Height | Example listing | Why you might choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | "around 8 to 9 inches", according to The Brick | Sealy Essentials Queen Boxspring in The Brick's Minden set: 9 inches; Springwall Queen Boxspring $170.00 at The Brick | A traditional bed height on a rail frame |
| Low-profile | "closer to 4 to 5 inches", according to The Brick | Sleep Country's Distinction Series, which it calls a 5.5-inch "bedroom profile box spring" for "a lower, sleeker look" (a little taller than The Brick's low-profile range), queen listed at "Was $249.00"; Sealy Elementary Queen Low-Profile Boxspring $300.00 at Leon's | A thick mattress, or a headboard that would sit too low behind a standard set |
| Split | Two narrow halves, standard or low-profile | Split options at + $280.00 on The Brick's Minden listings; the Remy II set with a split box spring at $799.00 at Leon's | Easier to move than a one-piece base |
The Brick also listed a queen "Posture Board, Mattress Foundation" at $79.20, listed alongside its box springs as a mattress foundation. Our box spring guide goes further into heights, sizes and every type of base.
When you can skip the box spring
A box spring does two jobs: it lifts the mattress and it gives it a flat, supportive surface. A frame that already does both makes the box spring optional for comfort, but check the mattress warranty before you skip it.
- Platform beds: The Brick's box spring page says "Platform beds are already designed with slats or a solid base, so a box spring is usually not required."
- Foam and hybrid mattresses: the same page says "Most spring mattresses work well with box springs, but foam and hybrid models may need a different base." Our guide to whether a hybrid needs a box spring goes through it frame by frame.
- Warranty wording: The Brick's set listing says "The manufacturer's warranty on a mattress depends on the mattress being properly supported by its matching boxspring. Without the matching boxspring, your manufacturer's warranty may be void." The Minden mattress listing names its compatible bases as a "Sealy Posturepedic® boxspring or any compatible adjustable base." Ask for the warranty text of the exact mattress before you buy it without the matching base.
- A frame you already own: if your platform frame is sound, buying the mattress alone avoids paying for, delivering and later removing a second piece. For capacity and slat spacing, see our platform bed frame guide.
How a set changes guarantees and old-mattress removal
Buying a set can matter after the sale too, because some store terms are written around sets and some fees are charged per piece.
- The Brick: its sleep satisfaction guarantee "only applies to mattresses or mattress and boxspring sets when purchased together", and offers "a one-time reselection to a new mattress set within 90 days of pick up or delivery". Removal of the old bed was listed as "Removal and Recycling for $15.75 per piece", so an old mattress and box spring count as two pieces.
- Leon's: its Sleep Tight Comfort Guarantee terms say "The purchase of a mattress set must be accompanied by the purchase and use of a 'Leon's Platinum Sleep Care' mattress cover", and allow "a one-time exchange of your mattress set for a model of equivalent or greater dollar value". Its listings priced haul away at "Existing Mattress - $15.00" and "Existing Boxspring - $15.00".
- Sleep Country: its 100 Night Comfort Guarantee allows "One (1) Comfort Guarantee exchange" per "mattress purchase", with a $99 exchange fee plus any price difference, and its Green Glove Delivery ($99.00) removes "your old mattress & base/boxspring (equal to the number of pieces purchased)", so a set bought there covers the removal of two old pieces.
Our comparison of Sleep Country, The Brick and Leon's sets out each store's guarantee, delivery and price-guarantee terms in full, and our guide to old-mattress removal in Canada covers removal fees.

Mattress set questions
Mattress set FAQs
Buying a set
What is a mattress set?
Quick answer: In The Brick's words, "a mattress and a matching box spring or foundation built to complement it." The set listings we read did not include a bed frame, headboard or bedding.
Is a mattress set cheaper than buying the mattress and box spring separately?
Quick answer: Not on the two queens we priced on October 28, 2026. Leon's Remy II queen was $399.00 alone and $699.00 as a set, and its matching box spring was listed at $300.00. The Brick's Minden queen was $849.95 alone and $1,019.95 as a set, the same as its "Standard + $170.00" base option. Sales can change this, so compare both listings on the day.
How much does a queen mattress set cost in Canada?
Quick answer: It depends almost entirely on the mattress. On October 28, 2026, examples at The Brick included $449.95 (Springwall Advance Regatta) and $2,799.00 (Serta Vanguard Stonehaven Eurotop Firm), and Leon's listed queen sets such as the Sealy Essentials Evan II at $599.00. Leon's queen set page put 37 of its 201 results between $500 and $1,000 and 107 between $2,000 and $5,000.
Do I need a box spring with my new mattress?
Quick answer: Only if your frame needs one or the mattress warranty asks for one. The Brick says platform beds "are already designed with slats or a solid base, so a box spring is usually not required", and that foam and hybrid models "may need a different base". Check the warranty of the exact mattress.
Box spring choices
What is the difference between a standard and a low-profile box spring?
Quick answer: Height. The Brick says standard box springs "typically measure around 8 to 9 inches in height, while low profile options are closer to 4 to 5 inches", and that both "serve the same functional role".
What is a split box spring?
Quick answer: A box spring made in two halves, which makes it easier to move. The Brick notes that "King boxsprings are split", and its Minden listings priced a split base at + $280.00, against + $170.00 for a standard one.
Does skipping the box spring void a mattress warranty?
Quick answer: It can, depending on the maker. The Brick's set listing says "Without the matching boxspring, your manufacturer's warranty may be void." Hamuq's warranty says its mattresses "are designed to work on a firm, solid-surface, on a bed base that is structurally capable of supporting the weight of the Mattress and user(s)", and its FAQ lists a box spring, slatted frame, platform bed or adjustable bed as suitable.
Does removing an old mattress set cost more?
Quick answer: At stores that charge per piece, yes: the mattress and box spring are two pieces. The Brick listed removal at $15.75 per piece, and Leon's at $15.00 for the mattress and $15.00 for the box spring. Sleep Country's $99.00 Green Glove Delivery removes as many old pieces as you buy.
How we know this
Every price and quotation about the three stores in this guide was read on October 28, 2026 from their own websites: The Brick's Mattress Sets and Boxsprings pages and its Sealy Posturepedic 1050 Series Minden Eurotop Medium Queen listings (mattress alone and set), read with postal code V5Z1A1; Leon's Queen Mattress and Box Spring Sets and Boxsprings & Bases pages and its Sealy Essentials Remy II Firm Eurotop Queen listings (mattress alone and set), read with its Richmond, British Columbia store selected; and Sleep Country's Box Springs page and Distinction Series Box Spring listing, read with an Ontario location (L6T 4N8) set. Guarantee and removal terms come from the same stores' guarantee and delivery pages, read the same day. Hamuq's details come from its product listings, FAQ, refund policy and warranty page. Prices differ by store and change often; Sleep Country's box springs showed a 15% sale when we read them, so we quote its "Was" price. We did not buy, test or return any mattress or base.
Pairing a mattress with a frame instead of a set?
The Hamuq Original Hybrid is $999 in queen on hamuq.mom, and Hamuq's FAQ lists a regular box spring, slatted bed frame, platform bed or adjustable bed as bases it can be used on. It comes with a 120-night trial and a 15-year limited warranty.
