12 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Mattress Online (2026): A Canadian Checklist

The twelve answers that decide whether an online mattress is a good buy: the real price, who owns the brand, trial conditions, warranty rules, delivery to your province, and what the seller does not publish. AI Overview answer

What should you ask before buying a mattress online in Canada?

Quick answer: Get twelve answers in writing before you check out: the regular price and whether the sale is real, who owns the brand, what is inside each layer, the firmness on the seller's own scale, the trial length and its minimum nights, the return conditions and who collects the mattress, the warranty's indentation threshold, what the bed needs underneath it, delivery time to your province, what happens if you return one item from a bundle, which material any certification covers, and what the seller does not publish.

A seller who answers all twelve on its own pages is describing a real product. Hamuq's answers are quoted below from its product and policy pages, read September 25, 2026. If the trial is your main question, start with Hamuq's return policy; if something goes wrong after you order, see your rights as an online buyer.

Before you buy

Which answers should stop the purchase?

No return path

If the trial page does not say how many nights, how many you must keep it first, and who collects it, you are buying without a trial.

No warranty number

A warranty that does not state the indentation depth it covers cannot be claimed against with any confidence.

A "regular price" it never sells at

If the bed is always on sale, the sale price is the price. Compare what you will pay today.

Your frame fails the base rule

Most warranties exclude damage from an unsupportive base. Check yours before the box arrives, not after.

1. What is the regular price, and is the sale real?

Canada's Competition Bureau sets out two tests for a "regular" or ordinary price claim. Under the volume test, more than 50 percent of sales were at that price or higher within a reasonable period, usually within a year, before or after the promotion. Under the time test, the product was offered in good faith at that price or higher for a substantial period of time, usually within a year, immediately before or after the promotion. A mattress that is discounted most weeks is, in practice, priced at its sale price. Our guide to when mattresses go on sale in Canada covers timing.

Hamuq: on September 25, 2026, every Original Hybrid and Organic Hybrid variant in Hamuq's product data showed a compare-at price equal to its price, so the listed price was the price: Queen Original Hybrid $999 CAD, Queen Organic Hybrid $1,999 CAD.

2. Who owns the brand?

Some Canadian mattress brands that look separate share an owner, and some review sites that rank them are owned by mattress companies too. Knowing this helps explain why "best of" lists disagree. Our ownership map of Canada's mattress brands is the reference.

Hamuq: Hamuq's about page names its co-founders, Jordan Bedwell and Nathan Nielson.

3. What is inside, layer by layer?

Ask for the thickness and material of every layer, the coil type and the cover fabric. Vague words such as "premium foam" describe a price, not a specification. Our guide to what is inside a mattress explains each layer type.

Hamuq: the FAQ lists the Original Hybrid as a 1-inch quilted pillow top (0.75 inch of 2 lb comfort foam and 0.25 inch of 10 oz polyester fill), 2 inches of Cloud Tech Soft foam (2 lb density), 0.5 inch of TRS Adaptive Gel foam (3 lb density), and a 9-inch support core of individually wrapped pocket coils, 12 inches in total, under a polyester, polyethylene and spandex knit cover. The Organic Hybrid is listed as an organic cotton cover, a wool quilt layer, a natural latex layer, a microcoil layer and a pocket coil base.

4. How firm is it on the seller's own scale?

Firmness scales are not standardised. Ask for the brand's number and its word, then compare with a bed you know. Our firmness chart by sleep position and body weight gives general ranges. If you have back or joint pain, talk to a doctor or physiotherapist rather than relying on a firmness chart.

Hamuq: the Original Hybrid product page calls it medium-firm, 6/10 on the firmness scale. The Organic Hybrid is firmer than the Original Hybrid.

5. How long is the trial, and how many nights must you keep it first?

The headline number matters less than the minimum-nights rule, because the usable decision window is the difference between the two. Our guide to Canadian sleep trials compares the fine print.

Hamuq: 120 nights from the day you receive it, and Hamuq requires at least 30 nights of use before a return.

6. What condition does it have to be in, and who collects it?

Stains can void a trial return. Some brands collect the mattress; others ask you to donate it yourself and send proof. Ask which, and at whose cost.

Hamuq: the product must be in donatable condition. Hamuq sends a courier to remove it and donates or recycles it, then refunds the original form of payment 100 percent. The return policy suggests a mattress bag from a moving store, Staples or Home Depot, which it prices at $15, to keep the mattress clean.

7. What does the warranty cover, and at what indentation depth?

Mattress warranties mostly cover sagging beyond a stated depth and defects, not comfort. The depth varies by brand, so ask for the number, and check who is covered: many warranties are for the original purchaser only. Our warranty guide explains the claim process.

Hamuq: a 15-year limited warranty from purchase for the original purchaser in Canada and the United States, covering visible indentation greater than one inch not associated with an improper or unsupportive foundation, and foam that splits or cracks. It is not transferable, and proof of purchase is required. It excludes a normal increase in softness and comfort preference.

8. What does it need underneath it?

Ask for the base requirement in the warranty's own words, and check your frame's slat spacing and centre support before the box arrives. Our guide to what bed frame a hybrid mattress needs covers the checks, and do you need a box spring for a hybrid answers the box spring question.

Hamuq: the warranty asks for a firm, solid surface on a bed base structurally capable of supporting the mattress and its users. The FAQ lists a regular box spring, slatted bed frame, platform bed or adjustable bed as compatible.

9. How long will delivery take to your province?

"Fast shipping" is not a number. Ask for the estimate to your province, whether it is a guarantee, and what happens if the courier cannot deliver.

Hamuq: shipping is free, with possible extra charges for the Canadian Territories. The product page says orders ship within one business day and gives regional estimates, stating they are not guarantees:

Hamuq delivery estimates by region, quoted from the Original Hybrid product page, read September 25, 2026. Estimates, not guarantees. Table 1 of 2.
Region Estimate Share of orders the page says meet it
Ontario 2 to 3 days 95%
Quebec 3 to 4 days 90%
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia 3 to 4 days 80%
Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan 4 to 5 days 80%
British Columbia 5 to 7 days 80%
Canadian Territories 7 to 10 days 80%

The shipping policy adds that orders are typically delivered within 2 to 7 business days after processing, that couriers such as FedEx may leave the package at the door if safe, and that a damaged package should be photographed and reported to info@hamuq.mom.

10. What happens if you return one item from a bundle?

Free pillows and sheets are common. Ask what happens to the free items, and to your refund, if you return the mattress. Our guide to mattress bundle deals in Canada covers what to check.

Hamuq: the FAQ says that if you return one item from a bundle, the remaining item or items may be charged at full retail price based on the website prices at the time of your original purchase.

11. Does a certification cover the material or the whole mattress?

Certifications are usually issued for a specific material, such as a foam, a latex or a fabric, and to the company that produces or processes it. A certificate for one layer does not describe the finished mattress. Ask which material each certificate covers, who holds it, and where you can look it up. Our certifications explainer covers how to read them.

Hamuq: the Organic Hybrid is described as using natural latex, wool and an organic cotton cover. Those are material descriptions; this guide makes no certification claim for either Hamuq mattress.

12. What does the seller not publish?

This question separates a transparent seller from a slick one. Every brand leaves something out. A brand that tells you what, and why, is easier to trust.

Hamuq: as of September 25, 2026, Hamuq's specifications are split across two places. The product pages carry the firmness rating and delivery estimates, while the FAQ carries the full layer list with thicknesses and densities. You may need both pages to answer one question, which is worth knowing before you compare brands side by side.

Where does each answer live, and which one is a deal-breaker?

Where each answer usually lives on a Canadian mattress site, and the answer that should stop the purchase. Table 2 of 2.
Question Where the answer usually lives Deal-breaker if
Regular price Product page, compare-at price The bed has never sold at the "regular" price
Ownership About page, footer, press releases You wanted an independent brand and it is not
Layers Product page or FAQ The seller cannot name a thickness or material
Firmness Product page No number and no word
Trial and minimum nights Return or trial policy page The minimum takes up most of the trial
Condition and pickup Return policy You must arrange disposal yourself at your cost
Warranty threshold Warranty page No depth is stated
Base requirement Warranty page and FAQ Your frame fails it
Delivery estimate Product page or shipping policy No estimate for your province
Bundle returns FAQ or return policy Returning the mattress costs you the bedding
Certifications Product page Brand-level claims with no holder or material named
What is not published Nowhere, so ask The seller says nothing is missing

What are your rights if an online mattress order goes wrong?

A sleep trial is the seller's own promise. Separately, provincial consumer protection law covers online purchases, and the details vary by province. Two official examples, read September 25, 2026:

  • British Columbia. Consumer Protection BC, the provincial regulator, says online sellers must show their legal or operating name, the total price including taxes and known extra costs, delivery details, and their return, refund and cancellation policy before you buy, and must send a copy of the contract within 15 days. You can cancel if the item is not delivered within 30 days of the supply date or purchase date, as long as you cancel before it arrives. After you cancel, the business has 15 days to refund you, and if it does not, you can ask your credit card company to reverse the charge.
  • Quebec. The Office de la protection du consommateur says you can cancel if you have not received the contract, within 30 days after the purchase, or within 7 days in certain cases where required information was missing. The merchant must refund within 15 days of your cancellation notice; if not, you can request a chargeback from your card issuer within 60 days.

Other provinces have their own rules; check your provincial consumer protection office. Keep the order confirmation and every email, and cancel in writing. This is general information, not legal advice.

Buyer questions

Online mattress buying FAQs for Canadian buyers

Before you order

What should I check before buying a mattress online?

Quick answer: The regular price and whether the sale is real, who owns the brand, the layer list, the firmness rating, the trial's minimum nights and return conditions, the warranty's indentation threshold and base rule, delivery time to your province, bundle return terms, and what each certification covers.

How do I know if a mattress sale is real in Canada?

Quick answer: The Competition Bureau expects a regular price to pass one of two tests: more than 50 percent of sales at that price or higher, or the product genuinely offered at that price for a substantial period, usually within a year. If the bed is always discounted, the sale price is the real price.

Do I need a box spring for a new mattress?

Quick answer: Not usually for a hybrid, which needs a firm, supportive base. Check the brand's warranty wording. Hamuq's FAQ lists a regular box spring, slatted bed frame, platform bed or adjustable bed as compatible.

Trials, warranties and returns

What questions should I ask about a mattress trial?

Quick answer: How many nights, how many you must keep it before returning, what condition it must be in, who collects it and at whose cost, how the refund is paid, and what happens to any bundled items.

What does a mattress warranty usually cover?

Quick answer: Sagging beyond a stated depth and defects, usually for the original purchaser and on a supportive base. Comfort preference and normal softening are excluded. Hamuq's threshold is visible indentation greater than one inch, over 15 years.

Can I cancel an online mattress order that has not arrived?

Quick answer: Often yes, under provincial law. In British Columbia, for example, you can cancel if it is not delivered within 30 days of the supply or purchase date, and the seller then has 15 days to refund. Rules vary by province.

Why does a mattress brand not publish everything?

Quick answer: Every brand omits something, or spreads it across several pages. Ask directly. A seller who tells you what is not published, and where the rest is, is being straight with you.
