Double Bed Size in Canada (2026): Exact Dimensions in Inches, cm and Feet, Double vs Full vs Queen, and What Six Canadian Brands Actually List
A double bed in Canada is 54 by 75 inches, and a double and a full are the same size. That is the short version. The longer version matters if you are buying sheets, a frame or a mattress from a different brand than the bed you have: we read six brands' size charts and 4 of them list their double one inch narrower. This guide gives the double in inches, centimetres and feet, shows exactly what each brand lists, compares the double with the twin and the queen, and works out the room, the bedding and the frame it needs.
AI Overview answer
What size is a double bed in Canada?
Quick answer: A double bed in Canada is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, which is 137.2 by 190.5 cm, or 4 feet 6 inches by 6 feet 3 inches. A double and a full are the same size; brands use both names, and some print "Full/Double". Endy and Polysleep list their double at 54 by 75 inches, as Hamuq's Canadian size chart does, but Douglas, Juno, Logan & Cove and Novosbed list theirs at 53 by 75 inches (134.6 by 190.5 cm) on the pages we read on October 26, 2026, so measure if an inch matters for your frame. A double is 6 inches narrower and 5 inches shorter than a queen (60 by 80 inches), gives two sleepers 27 inches of width each, and needs a room of about 8 feet 6 inches by 8 feet 3 inches to leave 24 inches of walking space on both sides and at the foot.
Before you buy anything for a double
Four measurements to check first
1. The mattress
Standard is 54 by 75 inches, but 4 of the six brands we read list 53 by 75. If you are matching an existing mattress, measure it. See what each brand lists.
2. The frame
Plan around the frame's outside size, not the mattress. The 13 Hamuq double frames in our double bed frame guide measure 74 to 82 inches long and 54 to 64 inches wide.
3. The room
About 102 by 99 inches (8 ft 6 in by 8 ft 3 in) leaves 24 inches on both sides and at the foot. See room size.
4. The bedding
A double takes full sheets and a double or full duvet, about 78 by 86 to 78 by 90 inches. See sheets, duvet and frame.
Double bed dimensions in inches, centimetres and feet
The standard Canadian double is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. In centimetres that is 137.2 by 190.5 cm (Hamuq's own guides round it to 137 by 190 or 137 by 191). In feet it is 4 feet 6 inches wide and 6 feet 3 inches long, or 4.5 by 6.25 feet. Its sleeping surface is 4,050 square inches, about 28.1 square feet. The table puts the double beside the twin, the twin XL and the queen so you can see what an upgrade or a downgrade changes.
| Size | Inches (W x L) | Centimetres | Feet and inches | Surface | Width per person, two sleepers | Smallest room, 24 in on both sides and the foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin (single) | 38 x 75 in | 96.5 x 190.5 cm | 3 ft 2 in x 6 ft 3 in | 19.8 sq ft | one sleeper | 86 x 99 in (7 ft 2 in x 8 ft 3 in) |
| Twin XL | 38 x 80 in | 96.5 x 203.2 cm | 3 ft 2 in x 6 ft 8 in | 21.1 sq ft | one sleeper | 86 x 104 in (7 ft 2 in x 8 ft 8 in) |
| Double (full) | 54 x 75 in | 137.2 x 190.5 cm | 4 ft 6 in x 6 ft 3 in | 28.1 sq ft | 27 in each | 102 x 99 in (8 ft 6 in x 8 ft 3 in) |
| Queen | 60 x 80 in | 152.4 x 203.2 cm | 5 ft x 6 ft 8 in | 33.3 sq ft | 30 in each | 108 x 104 in (9 ft x 8 ft 8 in) |
Two numbers in that table decide most double bed questions. The width per person is 27 inches when two people share a double, against 30 inches on a queen. And the length is 75 inches, the same as a twin and 5 inches shorter than a twin XL, queen or king; Hamuq's Canadian size chart notes that a 75-inch bed is short for anyone over about 5 feet 11 inches. The room column follows the same chart's rule: 24 inches of walking space on each side you use and 24 inches at the foot.
What six brands sold in Canada list for a double
Size charts are where the "standard" double turns out not to be quite standard. We read the size listings on six brands' product or FAQ pages on October 26, 2026. All six list the same queen, 60 by 80 inches. They do not all list the same double.
| Brand page | Size label used | Twin | Double or full | Queen | Thickness listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Douglas Original | Full/Double | 38 x 75 in | 53 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in | 10 in |
| Juno Mattress | Full/Double | 38 x 75 in | 53 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in | 8 in |
| Logan & Cove Choice | Full/Double | 38 x 75 in | 53 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in | 12 in |
| Novosbed | Double/Full | 38 x 75 in | 53 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in | 11 in |
| Endy Mattress | Full | 39 x 75 in | 54 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in | 9, 10 or 11 in by feel |
| Polysleep Origin | Full | 39 x 75 in | 54 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in | 10 in |
Douglas, Juno, Logan & Cove and Novosbed list a 53 by 75 inch double and a 38-inch twin. Endy and Polysleep list a 54 by 75 inch double and a 39-inch twin. All four brands that list 53 inches link to GoodMorning.com on the pages we read, and Juno and Logan & Cove name GoodMorning stores as the place to try their mattresses. None of the pages explains the inch, and we do not guess at a reason. What it means in practice:
- Sheets and protectors: fitted full or double sheets are sized for the standard 54-inch double, so on a 53-inch mattress they are cut 1 inch wider than the mattress. Full is still the right sheet size for both.
- Frames: a 53-inch mattress on a frame built for 54 leaves half an inch of space on each side. If the frame has a raised surround that holds the mattress, measure its inside width.
- Replacing one mattress with another brand's: if the old double was 54 inches and the new one is 53, or the other way round, nothing else in the room needs to change. If you are pushing two beds together, measure both.
Is a double the same as a full?
Yes. "Double" and "full" are two names for one mattress size. The brand pages in Table 2 show both habits: Douglas, Juno, Logan & Cove and Novosbed print combined labels such as "Full/Double" and "Double/Full", while Endy and Polysleep say "Full". Hamuq sells its mattresses as "Full", lists most of its bed frames as "Full", and lists its Boucle Platform Bed Frame as "Double". Whichever word a store uses, the size behind it is the 54 by 75 inch double (or 53 by 75 at the four brands above). Our double mattress guide compares full-size mattresses by price.
Double vs queen: what the extra 6 inches and 5 inches buy
A queen is 60 by 80 inches against the double's 54 by 75. That is 6 inches more width, 5 inches more length and 18.5 per cent more sleeping surface. In practice:
- Width: 30 inches per person on a queen against 27 on a double when two people share. One sleeper has room on either.
- Length: the queen's 80 inches suits sleepers over about 5 feet 11; the double's 75 does not.
- Room: the queen needs about 108 by 104 inches of floor (9 ft by 8 ft 8 in) with the same clearances, 6 inches wider and 5 inches deeper than the double.
- Price: at Hamuq the Original Hybrid is $899 in full and $999 in queen at list on October 26, 2026. Across brands the gap varies; our queen mattress guide prices 16 queens.
A double makes more sense than a queen when the room is the limit, when one person sleeps in it, or when it is a guest bed. A queen makes more sense when two adults share nightly or anyone is over about 5 feet 11.
What size room does a double bed need?
Allowing 24 inches of walking space on both sides and 24 inches at the foot, a double mattress needs a floor area of 102 by 99 inches, or 8 feet 6 inches by 8 feet 3 inches. Push one long side against a wall and the width falls to 78 inches (6 feet 6 inches). Those numbers are for the mattress itself; the frame adds to them. The 13 Hamuq double frames compared in our double bed frame guide measure 74 to 82 inches long and 54 to 64 inches wide outside, so the widest takes 10 inches more floor width than the mattress and can take back much of the space a double saves over a queen.
For the common 10 by 10 foot bedroom, Hamuq's room-fit chart works through every size with its frame, door swing and furniture, and concludes that a double is the largest bed that fits a 10 by 10 room with comfortable clearance on both sides.
Is a double big enough for two people?
It is a question of inches. Split down the middle, a double gives each of two sleepers 27 inches of width, 11 inches less than a twin gives one person. A queen gives 30 inches each and a king 38, the width of a whole twin. Hamuq's size chart puts it plainly: one adult is fine on a twin or a double, and two adults want a queen or larger. If you are choosing between the two for a shared bed, lie on both side by side in your usual positions before you decide, and check the trial terms of the mattress you buy.
How thick is a double mattress?
Thickness is not part of the size. The six mattresses in Table 2 list heights from 8 inches (Juno) to 12 inches (Logan & Cove Choice), with Douglas and Polysleep at 10, Novosbed at 11, and Endy at 9, 10 or 11 inches depending on the feel. Thickness matters for two purchases: fitted sheets, whose pocket depth has to clear the mattress, and the frame, where a thick mattress on a tall frame raises the sleeping height. Check the height on the mattress's own page; Hamuq's guide to mattress-in-a-box dimensions covers box sizes and weights for delivery.
Sheets, duvet and frame for a double
- Sheets: buy full (double) sheets. They are the right size for both the 54-inch and the 53-inch doubles in Table 2. Queen sheets are cut for a 60 by 80 inch mattress, 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a double, so they sit loose on one.
- Duvet and cover: Hamuq's duvet size chart gives a Canadian double or full duvet as about 78 by 86 to 78 by 90 inches, against 88 by 90 for a queen. A queen duvet on a double hangs lower at the sides, which some people prefer.
- Frame: check the outside footprint, not only the mattress size it fits, and the support it gives a boxed mattress. Our double frame guide and bed frame buying guide cover both.
- Box spring: a double box spring is also 54 by 75 inches; our box spring guide explains when you still need one.

Choosing
Is a full the same as a double?
Quick answer: Yes. Full and double are two names for the same size; Canadian brands print "Full", "Double", "Full/Double" or "Double/Full". Hamuq sells its mattresses as "Full".
How much bigger is a queen than a double?
Quick answer: 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer: 60 by 80 inches against 54 by 75. That is 18.5 per cent more sleeping surface and 3 more inches of width per person for two sleepers.
Can two adults sleep on a double bed?
Quick answer: They can, with 27 inches of width each, which is 11 inches less than a twin gives one person. Hamuq's size chart suggests a queen or larger for two adults; a double suits one sleeper, a guest room or a small room.
What size room do you need for a double bed?
Quick answer: About 102 by 99 inches (8 feet 6 inches by 8 feet 3 inches) for the mattress with 24 inches of walking space on both sides and at the foot, or 78 inches wide with one side against a wall. Add the frame's extra size on top.
What size sheets fit a double bed?
Quick answer: Full sheets, which are the same thing as double sheets. They fit 54-inch and 53-inch doubles. Check the pocket depth against the mattress thickness, which ran from 8 to 12 inches among the six mattresses we read.
How we know this
The standard dimensions and the 24-inch clearance rule are from Hamuq's Canadian size chart. The brand dimensions in Table 2 were read on October 26, 2026 from the product or FAQ page linked for each brand, as those pages list them; we did not measure any mattress. Centimetres, feet, surface area, width per person and room sizes were calculated by Hamuq from those inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Frame footprints are from Hamuq's double bed frame guide and duvet sizes from Hamuq's duvet size chart. Hamuq prices and stock status were read from hamuq.mom on October 26, 2026, and the cart prices come from test carts built that day with one mattress at a time; nothing was bought. Brands change their pages; the linked pages are the record.
Buying for a double?
